It seems to me that the Arts have been gaining more and more support
in the community since I’ve been playing in Fayetteville. This is
very refreshing to see because it feels like what we’re doing as
musicians is important.

Musical Questions
When did you join the FSO? In 2005,
then again in 2007.
Why do you enjoy playing with the FSO?
I enjoy playing with the FSO because of its unlimited potential.
Every rehearsal sounds better and better than the one previous, and
that’s exciting to see as a preformer.
When did you start playing? Guitar at
11, clarinet at 12 and a switch to bassoon at 13.
Do you play any other instruments?
Guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, machines, whatever…
Where else have you performed outside
of the FSO? Carolina Ballet, Opera Co of NC, Raleigh Sym, Durham
Sym, Cape Fear Winds, NC Symphony, etc.
What is your most memorable moment on
stage (good or bad)? My most memorable memory was during my senior
year at Boston Univ. I played principle bassoon for Beethoven’s
9th Symphony at Symphony Hall for the BU orchestra. I
remember feeling completely exhausted afterwards, that I never put
more of myself into a performance. It was a tremendous experience.
Who has been the biggest influence on
your musical career? That’s a tough one. I’d have to say my
high school music teachers were the biggest influence, but also
anyone else I’ve witnessed sacrificing for the presuit of their
art.
What sort of music do you enjoy playing
or listening to? All kinds, but mostly stuff I grew up with -
everything from punk rock to funk, jazz, classical. No country. I
also enjoy composing my own music, which tends to include loud
guitars and drum machines, and tons of energy!
How do you deal with pre-concert
nerves? Eat a bananna…it naturally heightens mental alertness and
decreases the effect of nerves. NO caffene! Of course, you could
always down a shot of gin before going onstage if there isn’t a
bananna to be found!
Who are your favorite composers?
Stravinsky, Beethoven, Mahler, Francaix, Prince.
What is/are your favorite piece(s) of
music? No all-time favorite. I go though phases with most pieces.
What sort of music do you listen to in
your car or when unwinding after a long day at work? Usually sports
talk or jazz/npr. I don’t really like to analyse or think about
music too much in the car.
