Andy joined the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra in the first violin section in 2016. Andy is excited to be fulfilling a well-rounded career in music. He is currently employed with the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System where he is the orchestra director of the Thomas Jefferson Middle School, and Mount Tabor High School. Through the same school system, Andy was a long-term substitute Orchestra director at East Forsyth High School and East Forsyth Middle School. Since 2017, Andy serves as a teaching artist through the Winston-Salem Symphony’s P.L.A.Y Music Program, where he teaches violin to elementary school students. Prior to this, Andy served as a full time volunteer with ArtistCorps. This service is an AmeriCorps program geared at bringing arts through teaching and performing to local schools. Through ArtistCorps, Andy assisted the orchestra program at Diggs-Latham Elementary School, Wiley Middle School, Wake Forest University’s summer Freedom School, Old Town Elementary School, and the Salvation Army.
Andy is a native of Massachusetts, where he holds a bachelor of Music degree in Violin Performance from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Since his time in Massachusetts, he moved to North Carolina and got his Masters degree in Violin Performance from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA). At the University of Massachusetts, Andy studied with Elizabeth Chang, and received regular chamber music coachings with Astrid Schween (the Cellist of the Julliard String Quartet), and Gilles Vonsattel (Pianist, winner of the Naumberg competition). While pursuing his Masters of Music at UNCSA, Andy was a student of Kevin Lawrence, and received regular chamber music coachings from Dmitri Shteinberg and Eric Larsen.
In his free time, Andy enjoys running and hiking. He currently resides in Winston-Salem with his wife, Lilian-Terri Dahlenburg (principal violist with the Fayetteville Symphony), and their cat, Gussie.
