Jian began playing cello at age 6 and graduated from the Central Conservatory of Music (Beijing, China), having received prizes including Best Cellist, Best Performance in Beijing's Central Conservatory of Music Cello Competition and in various other competitions. After being awarded a Bachelor’s degree in 2002, Jian began Master's degree studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater (HMT) in Rostock, Germany, under Prof. von Bülow, who was the student of Gregor Piatigorsky and Pierre Fournier. At the HMT, he was a principal cellist and played in numerous concert projects, such as a live concert for the North Germany Public Radio classical music channel. In 2005, Jian performed a cello sonata created by the German composer Thomas Ehricht, who stated: "Jian is the best cellist who has ever played this cello sonata". After being awarded a master’s degree by the HMT, he was invited to perform in New York City. In April 2009, he performed with Manhattan Chamber Philharmonic in Carnegie Hall, New York. As a generalist musician, Jian performs in solo, chamber and baroque music concerts. As a solo cellist, he has been invited to perform in Europe, Japan, Washington, DC and Maryland. Since 2008, he has been a member of the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra, North Carolina.
