Fayetteville
Symhony Orchestra and Cape Fear Regional Theatre's Collaboration on
Porgy
& Bess
met with Sensational Reviews!
“Culminating
a project that artistic director Bo Thorp called the most ambitious
in the theatre's 46-year history, Cape Fear Regional Theatre opened
its limited run of hte Gershwin folk opera to a near-capacity crowd.
Featuring some stunning singing and staging and a
stellar performance of the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra,
the production can only be considered a success.” - Rodger
Mullen, Fayetteville Observer (3.7.08)
Fayetteville
Symphony Orchestra and Cape Fear Regional Theatre, cast and crew,
local and international, all rose to the challenge in their
collaboration for this highly-anticipated, long-fought-for production
of a limited engagement of Gershwin's Porgy
& Bess from
March 6-9, 2008. A masterpiece of American Folk Opera with soaring
vocals from a cast of approximately 85 members and soulful music
infused with blues and jazz played expertly by over 50 members of the
Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra, took patrons on an emotional
rollarcoaster. It was truly a sight to behold and a joy to hear.
Seasoned professional FSO musicians and guest conductor
David Wolff enticed the packed audiences through the plot with some
deceptively simple yet musically deep and nuanced songs of this
compelling opera. This was an extraordinary entertainment
experience.
