What do you like about Fayetteville? It's poximity to the beach and mountains - and all the places to find sushi!
What is something about yourself that most people don't know? In 1992, I became the first female bass drummer in the history of The Ohio State Univeristy Marching Band. I was a jazz saxophone major for a time.
Musical Questions
When did you join the FSO? 2002
When did you start playing? I started playing the violin at age 8.
Do you play any other instruments? I play violin, viola, cello, bass, clarinet, bass clarinet, tenor saxophone, baritone, piano, mandolin and guitar. I may have forgotten a few.
Where else have you performed outside of the FSO? I've performed with the Upper Arlington (OH) Civic Orchestra, Westerville (OH) Civic Symphony Orchestra, Mansfield (OH) Symphony Orchestra, Ashland (OH) Symphony Orchestra, and the Florence (SC) Symphony Orchestra. I also perform with several area quartets including the Cumberland Quartet and the Vilasi Quartet. I'm also the principal violist of the Snyder Memorial Baptist Church Orchestra. I've aso performed with the Richland Saxophone Quartet and Tuba Christmas. I still perform with The Ohio State University Alumni Marching Band.
What is your most memorable moment on stage (good or bad)? The symphony I was playing with was premiering the Tracy Silverman Electric Violin Concerto. During Saturday night's performance, the conductor missed a few beats and the entire cello and viola sections got lost. Unfortunately, this was just prior to a viola and cello soli. Needless to say, the conductor was vigorously conducting to silence for about five measures. We got it on the next performance.
Who has been the biggest influence on your musical career? Percy Hall, my high school band and orchestra director.
What sort of music do you enjoy playing or listening to? I don't like to listen to baroque or classical music, but I enjoy playing it - I think it's the structure. I'd rather listen to Romantic music - there's a lot more going on there for your ears!
How do you deal with pre-concert nerves? The only time I'm ever nervous is when I am soloing. The best cure is to be as prepared as possible. Practice until you know the piece backwards and forwards, that way, when something beyond your control happens, you only have to deal with that.
Who are your favorite composers? Brahms, Faure, Beethoven
What is/are your favorite piece(s) of music? Brahms Symphony No. 1, Brahms Eine Deutsches Requiem, Faure Requiem, Beethoven Symphony No. 9, Dvorak Serenade for Strings, Bernstein West Side Story Suite.
What sort of music do you listen to in your car or when unwinding after a long day at work? I tend to listen to silence in the car. My ears need a rest.
